Historical Timeline

Year 1898 - Student foundation in Bern

On March 14, 1898, four high school students from Bern's Gymnasium—brothers Max and Fred Schwab, Hermann Bauer, and Franz Kehrli—founded the Football-Club Young Boys. After witnessing a match between FC Bern and FC Basel, the young men decided to create their own club to represent the impetus of the new generation, taking the name 'Young Boys' in deliberate contrast to the already established 'Old Boys' of Basel. They adopted the gold and black colors of Bern's cantonal and municipal flag as their official emblem. Four days later, on March 18, they agreed on their first regulations and established Spitalacker-Platz as their training ground, quickly joining the regional competitive calendar.

Year 1909-1911 - The first triple championship in Swiss football history

Between 1909 and 1911, Young Boys marked a foundational milestone in Swiss football by becoming the first club to win three consecutive Swiss Serie A championships. Tactically led by midfielder and captain Paul Kaiser, the Bernese team defeated high-caliber rivals like FC Winterthur and Servette FC in the zonal finals, establishing the first dynasty of Swiss football and forging a deep rivalry with clubs from the Zurich region.

Year 1957-1960 - Sing's 'Quadruple' and European Cup semifinals

Under the technical direction of German strategist Albert Sing, Young Boys starred in the most illustrious era of their history by winning four consecutive National A League championships (1957, 1958, 1959, and 1960) and the 1958 Swiss Cup in the newly inaugurated Wankdorfstadion. On the international stage, the team reached the semifinals of the 1958/59 European Cup (predecessor of the Champions League): after eliminating MTK Budapest and Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, they won 1-0 in the first leg of the semifinals against Just Fontaine's Stade de Reims before falling in Paris, placing themselves among the continental elite with legends like Walter Eich, Heinz Schneiter, and Eugen Meier.

Year 1986 - League champion after 26 years of drought

In the 1985/86 season, under the technical leadership of Polish coach Aleksander Mandziara, Young Boys broke a 26-year period without league titles by becoming National A League champions. Supported by the offensive talent of Dane Lars Lunde and Swiss Dario Zuffi, the Bern club secured the crown on a memorable final matchday in Neuchâtel before more than 12,000 traveling Bernese fans, extending their success the following year with the conquest of the 1987 Swiss Cup against Servette in extra time.

Year 2018-2023 - Modern golden era: breaking hegemony and shining in Champions League

On April 28, 2018, under the technical direction of Austrian Adolf 'Adi' Hütter, Young Boys defeated FC Luzern 2-1 with a dramatic goal from Jean-Pierre Nsame and ended a 32-year drought without league championships, dismantling FC Basel's hegemonic dominance. This triumph led to a historic cycle under Gerardo Seoane, winning five league titles in six seasons, two national doubles, and achieving historic qualifications for the UEFA Champions League group stage, highlighted by the resounding 2-1 victory over Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus in December 2018.
