Historical Timeline
Year 1893 - Foundation in the Shoemakers' Guild
On November 15, 1893, at the restaurant of the guild corporation Schuhmachern-Zunft (Freie Strasse 44, Basel), the constituent assembly of Fussballclub Basel was held. The initiative arose from a public call published three days earlier in the Basler National-Zeitung newspaper by Roland Geldner, who urged local youth and academic and commercial circles to organize a formal club given the advance of football in Zurich and St. Gallen. The meeting was attended and signed by Roland Geldner (elected first president), Josy Ebinger (first captain), Ferdinand Isler (secretary), Emil Abderhalden, Max Born, Max Geldner, Wilhelm Glaser, Jean Grieder, Wilhelm Oser, Fritz Schäublin, Lucien Schmoll, Richard Strub, and Adolf Teuscher. A few days later, Hans Gamper (Joan Gamper) joined, who years later would found FC Barcelona, adopting the 'blaugrana' (rotblau) colors of the Swiss entity.
Year 1933 - First Swiss Cup and triumphant baptism
On April 9, 1933, FC Basel won the first official trophy in its history by becoming champion of the Swiss Cup at the Hardturm Stadion in Zurich. In a high-tension final against Grasshopper Club, Basel won 4-3 thanks to braces from forwards Otto Haftl and Alfred Jaeck, who countered the Zurich reaction in the final stages of the match. This conquest inaugurated the club's national trophy cabinet after four decades of regional competition.
Year 1967-1980 - The Benthaus era and the first national hegemony
Under the technical direction of the German Helmut Benthaus (initially player-coach) and with the on-field leadership of midfielder Karl Odermatt, Basel experienced its first golden age, winning seven National A League titles (1967, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1977, and 1980) and two Swiss Cups (1967 and 1975). This period modernized the tactical schemes and athletic preparation of Swiss football, turning the old St. Jakob-Stadion into an impregnable fortress for local and international rivals.
Year 2001-2002 - New St. Jakob-Park, double, and leap to the Champions League
The inauguration of the St. Jakob-Park stadium in March 2001 symbolized the club's sporting and institutional rebirth after more than two decades without league championships. Under the tactical command of Christian Gross, FC Basel won the league and cup double in the 2001/02 season. This triumph allowed them to qualify for the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, a competition where they overcame the preliminary round against Celtic FC and advanced to the second group stage after competing on equal terms against continental powers such as Liverpool, Juventus, and Manchester United.
Year 2010-2017 - Historic consecutive octo-championship and European resonance
Between the 2009/10 and 2016/17 seasons, FC Basel set an unprecedented record in Swiss football by winning eight consecutive Super League titles. Supported by a prolific youth academy from which figures like Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Yann Sommer emerged, the team extended its dominance to the European stage: they eliminated Manchester United in the 2011/12 Champions League group stage, defeated Bayern Munich in the round of 16 (1-0), beat Chelsea in both group stage matches in 2013, and reached the semifinals of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League.
