Historical Timeline
Year - 1881: Official foundation and the birth of the Hertfordshire pioneer
The club was officially founded in 1881 under the name Watford Rovers by Henry Grover and an enthusiastic group of young sportsmen from the town of Watford, situated in the county of Hertfordshire (England, overlooking the Colne Valley and surrounded by the agricultural plains of the south of the country). The idea arose with the aim of establishing a winter sports and recreational club that would enable the team to compete formally within the district. The team began playing their friendly matches on the pitches at Cassiobury Park, wearing yellow and red colours, thereby establishing a strong community identity and earning the distinctive nickname ‘The Hornets’.
Year - 1922: The definitive and historic move to Vicarage Road
In 1922, after playing at various grounds during its early years, the club took the momentous decision to settle permanently at its current and historic stadium, Vicarage Road. Vicarage Road quickly became an impregnable stronghold and the setting for some of the club’s most memorable campaigns in the Football League, forging deep-rooted ties with the local community and institutions throughout the Hertfordshire region.
Year - 1977–1987: The meteoric rise of Elton John and Graham Taylor
The takeover of the club by global pop star and ardent supporter Sir Elton John in 1976, and the appointment of manager Graham Taylor, marked the beginning of the club’s absolute golden age. In an unprecedented meteoric rise, Taylor guided Watford from the Fourth Division to finish as First Division runners-up in the 1982–83 season and reach the FA Cup final in 1984, whilst also qualifying for European competitions and building a loyal and passionate fanbase.
Year - 2019: A return to the FA Cup final at Wembley
On 18 May 2019, Watford reached the FA Cup final for the second time in their history at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Under the guidance of Spanish manager Javi Gracia, the ‘Hornets’ completed a brilliant cup run, knocking out major rivals after staging an unforgettable comeback in the semi-final against Wolverhampton to win 3–2 in extra time, earning the respect and absolute admiration of the entire English footballing world for their courage, fighting spirit and tactical tenacity.
