Historical Timeline
Year - 1882: The school was founded under the guidance of Harry Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur was founded on 5 September 1882 as the humble ‘Hotspur Football Club’ by a group of young grammar school pupils from All Hallows Church who were members of the local cricket club. They decided to form the football club to keep the group together during the winter, heroically naming the club in clear, purist homage to the brave and temperamental medieval English warrior Sir Henry Percy (‘Harry Hotspur’), famous for his lethal combat spurs.
Year - 1901: The unique and seemingly impossible feat of a lower-league club
Tottenham made their first major mark on history in 1901 by becoming, in spectacular and astonishing fashion, the only non-league club (at the time independent members of the semi-amateur Southern League) to win the hallowed, historic and coveted FA Cup in the 20th century, defeating the powerful, professional Sheffield United in an epic and unexpected victory in the replay final, and forever linking their name to the historic colours of the trophy.
Year - 1960–1961: Bill Nicholson’s epic and masterful first ‘Double’ of the century
The club’s most legendary and unforgettable era (‘The Tottenham Way’) emerged under the immense tactical intelligence and elegant precision of the masterful manager Bill Nicholson. Promoting a style of play that was astonishingly attractive, fluid, tactical and fast-paced (‘push and run’), the lethal Tottenham side led by Danny Blanchflower heroically and spectacularly achieved in 1961 what had seemed logistically insurmountable: winning both the League and the FA Cup in the same season, securing England’s first modern ‘Double’.
Year - 1970s–1980s: A stronghold in European and domestic cup competitions
With the glorious DNA of unyielding, polished attacking football, the club established itself fiercely and magnificently as a formidable, lethal force, relentlessly feared in short tournaments. Led by Ardiles, Villa and Hoddle, and under the shrewd and fierce tactical guidance of Keith Burkinshaw, the team from north of the Thames amassed an immense and colossal trophy haul, winning the glorious UEFA Cup (1972, 1984) and a spectacular, heroic and magical back-to-back FA Cup double in the early 1980s.
Year - 2000s–present: The huge stadium and the protracted trophy drought
Under the dynamic leadership of Daniel Levy, the club consolidated its structure by opening the ultra-modern and colossal Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and reached a glorious and historic competitive high by making it to the stunning 2019 Champions League final under Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino. However, all this massive modernisation clashes astonishingly, fiercely and tragically, and without ceasing, with an infamous, long and suffocating drought of official titles and honours that has persistently lingered since 2008.
