Historical Timeline
Year - 1863: Founded as Stoke Ramblers and its student heritage
The club was officially founded in 1863 under the name Stoke Ramblers by an enthusiastic group of former pupils of Wyggeston School and Charterhouse School who were working as engineering apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway workshops in the town of Stoke-on-Trent, situated in the county of Staffordshire (England, in the Trent Valley and at the heart of the traditional pottery-making region). The initiative, led by Henry Almond (who was the first captain and scored the team’s first official goal), arose with the express aim of establishing a football club that would provide recreation and physical exercise for the engineers, with their original friendly matches being played at Sweeting’s Meadow to great local anticipation.
Year - 1888: Pioneering pride as a founding member of the Football League
Stoke City holds the immense historical honour of being one of the twelve proud elite clubs that founded the Football League in 1888, competing in the inaugural season of the world’s first football league. After adopting the name Stoke Football Club and turning professional under the chairmanship of Harry Allen, the club began playing at the historic and iconic Victoria Ground in 1878, establishing its home ground and forging a highly respected identity throughout the heart of England.
Year - 1972: The historic League Cup victory with Gordon Banks
On 4 March 1972, Stoke City wrote a glorious chapter in its history, one of its greatest sources of national pride. Led by manager Tony Waddington, the team reached the League Cup final at Wembley, where they faced the formidable Chelsea. In a thrilling and physically demanding match, Stoke ran out 2–1 winners thanks to goals from Terry Conroy and George Eastham, with an outstanding performance in goal from the legendary Sir Gordon Banks, lifting the biggest official trophy in the club’s history.
Year - 1997: Farewell to Victoria Ground and the move to Britannia Stadium
In August 1997, after 119 years of uninterrupted home ground and fond memories on the famous, muddy pitches of Victoria Ground, the club moved to its current, imposing home: the Britannia Stadium (now known as the bet365 Stadium). This historic move symbolised the club’s modernisation and civic revival in the 21st century, transforming it into an impregnable fortress where one of the country’s noisiest and most loyal sets of supporters has unconditionally backed the club’s campaigns in the Premier League and the FA Cup.
