Historical Timeline
Year - 1885: Founded as St Mary’s YMA in the ecclesiastical heart of the city
The club was officially founded on 21 November 1885 under the name St Mary’s Church Young Men’s Association Football Club by a group of enthusiasts from St Mary’s Church in the coastal town of Southampton, in the county of Hampshire (in southern England, on the shores of the English Channel and at the confluence of the River Test and the River Itchen). The proposal, spearheaded by the vicar and club leader Arthur Sole, arose from the need to provide an alternative form of winter sporting recreation and social integration for the parish’s young people. The team began playing their friendly matches on Southampton Common, wearing white and red colours, thereby establishing a solid foundation within the local community and earning the enduring nickname ‘The Saints’.
Year - 1898: The opening of The Dell and the club’s establishment in the top flight
In 1898, the club took the momentous decision to move to its historic and much-loved ground, The Dell, designed by the famous architect Archibald Leitch. The Dell quickly became an instantly recognisable stadium and an impregnable stronghold due to the extremely close proximity of the supporters to the pitch, serving as the setting where the club’s traditional colours were established and its institutional roots in the Football League in the south of the country were cemented.
Year - 1976: The historic and unforgettable FA Cup triumph at Wembley
On 1 May 1976, Southampton wrote the most successful and unforgettable chapter in its sporting history at national level. Led by manager Lawrie McMenemy and then playing in the Second Division, the ‘Saints’ reached the FA Cup final at Wembley, where they faced the formidable First Division side Manchester United. In a thrilling and skilfully played match, Southampton secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory thanks to a last-gasp, memorable curling shot from striker Bobby Stokes in the closing minutes, lifting the FA Cup trophy.
Year - 2001: A return to St Mary’s roots and civic modernisation
In August 2001, after 103 years of uninterrupted history and unforgettable memories at The Dell, the club moved to its modern, state-of-the-art home: St Mary’s Stadium, an imposing venue built in the very same harbour area where the geographical roots of its ecclesiastical foundation in 1885 lie. This milestone symbolised the club’s institutional modernisation and civic revival in the 21st century, strengthening its fan base and paving the way for its subsequent return to the elite of English football.
