Historical Timeline
Year - 1893: Founded at the Britannia Inn as Headington United
The club was officially founded on 27 October 1893 under the name Headington Football Club (and shortly afterwards Headington United) during a meeting of local sportsmen at the Britannia Inn pub in Headington, in the city of Oxford, situated in the county of Oxfordshire (in the south of England, on the banks of the River Thames and the River Cherwell). It was founded on the initiative of Dr Robert Buckell and a group of cricket and tennis enthusiasts who sought to create a formal association football team to provide sporting recreation and social integration for the parish during the winter months. The team adopted yellow and blue as its colours, laying the institutional foundations of the club rooted in neighbourhood and working-class life.
Year - 1960–1962: The move to Oxford United and entry into the Football League
In 1960, with the aim of representing the entire prestigious and cosmopolitan community of the county and the city, the club formally adopted its definitive name: Oxford United Football Club. Two years later, after dominating the Southern League under the leadership of its chairman Harry Thompson and manager Arthur Turner, the club was elected to join the Football League in 1962, cementing ‘The Ox’ on its crest as a symbol of the region.
Year - 1984–1985: Back-to-back promotion titles and promotion to the First Division
Under the sound tactical leadership of manager Jim Smith and the chairmanship of Robert Maxwell, Oxford United enjoyed its golden age of greatest national success. In the 1983–84 season, the team were crowned Third Division champions and, the following year (1984–85), went on to win the Second Division title, securing promotion to the English First Division for the first time in their history, outclassing all their rivals with brilliant attacking football.
Year - 1986: League Cup glory at Wembley
On 20 April 1986, Oxford United wrote a golden chapter in the history of national pride. Managed by Maurice Evans, the team reached the final of the League Cup (Milk Cup) at the legendary Wembley Stadium, where they faced the formidable Queens Park Rangers. In a thrilling and skilfully played match, Oxford ran out convincing 3–0 winners, thanks to goals from Trevor Hebberd, Ray Houghton and Jeremy Charles, lifting the trophy and sparking widespread jubilation throughout Oxfordshire.
