Historical Timeline
Year - 1902: The Criterion Café is founded and the Canario is born
The club was officially founded on 17 June 1902 during a historic meeting of tradespeople and sports fans at the Criterion Café in the city of Norwich, situated in the county of Norfolk (in the east of England, on the banks of the River Wensum and amongst the farmland of East Anglia). It was founded on the initiative of Robert Webster and Albert T. Wright with the aim of establishing a professional football club representing the whole of the East Anglian community. The club quickly adopted yellow and green as its colours in honour of the long-standing canary-breeding industry introduced by Flemish refugees in the 16th century, thereby establishing a highly distinctive identity within British football.
Year - 1935: The record-breaking construction and the historic move to Carrow Road
In 1935, due to rising attendance figures at their former ground, The Nest, the club took the momentous and historic decision to move to a new venue. Carrow Road was built in an unprecedented record time of just 82 days in time for the start of the season. Carrow Road quickly became the undisputed spiritual home of Norfolk’s supporters and an impregnable stronghold where the ‘Canaries’ established their deep-rooted presence in the east.
Year - 1962–1985: Winning the League Cups at Wembley
Winning the League Cup marked some of the club’s proudest moments. In 1962, under manager Willie Reid, Norwich won their first major trophy by defeating Rochdale in the final. In 1985, the team repeated the feat by beating Sunderland 1–0 at the legendary Wembley Stadium, thanks to a fortuitous defensive deflection in the Milk Cup final, ushering in an era of direct, combative football.
Year - 1993: A hard-fought victory in Munich and third place in the Premier League
In the Premier League’s inaugural season (1992–93), Mike Walker’s Norwich side took European football by storm by challenging for the title and finishing in a historic third place behind Manchester United and Aston Villa. In the UEFA Cup the following season, they achieved a once-in-a-lifetime feat by becoming the first (and only) English club to defeat the formidable Bayern Munich at the legendary Olympiastadion, winning 2–1 thanks to a superb volley from Jeremy Goss.
