Historical Timeline
Year - 1892: The peaceful merger of neighbourhoods to create a single powerhouse
Newcastle United was formally and historically founded in December 1892 as a result of a vital and pressing need for urban and financial survival. It was created through the amicable merger of two local rivals, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. Faced with the economic collapse of the West End, the East End took the reins, absorbed the players and moved to the central and imposing pitch at St James’ Park, uniting the city under a single club.
Year - The 1900s: The golden age of tyranny and Edwardian rule
In the first decade of the 20th century (the Edwardian era), the fledgling Newcastle side put together a formidable team that completely dominated the early days of British football. With their famous pioneering style of short passing and a line-up brimming with rugged and tenacious Scottish talent, the Magpies overwhelmingly and gloriously won three First Division titles and lifted their first, long-awaited FA Cup – a precious and historic triumph – in front of huge crowds of miners at St James’ Park.
Year - The 1950s: The glorious, trophy-laden reign of ‘Wor Jackie’ Milburn
During the turbulent and unpredictable post-war years, Newcastle forged its colossal reputation and legend as the ‘King of Cups’. Led majestically by their astonishing and relentless local idol and goal-scorer Jackie Milburn, the club made a heroic and unforgettable mark at the legendary Wembley Stadium, winning the FA Cup three glorious times in just five years (1951, 1952 and 1955), unleashing pure madness and unbridled fanaticism in the gloomy stands of the North of England.
Year - 1992–1997: The vibrant and dramatic era of ‘Los Entertainers’
The arrival of idol Kevin Keegan as manager rescued the club from the brink of relegation and forged a revolutionary, high-octane side (‘The Entertainers’) that played the most spectacular, fast-paced and romantic football of the era, featuring a host of dazzling stars. However, their fragile defence led to the most dramatic collapse in modern English football history, as they squandered – in an unprecedented and fatal manner – a massive 12-point lead over Manchester United in 1996.
Year - 2007–present: Ashley’s dark tyranny and the Saudi mega-fund
The club endured fourteen bleak, sombre and uneventful years of bitter stagnation and relegations under the unpopular and unstable ownership of Mike Ashley. In October 2021, the miraculous and controversial sale of the club to Saudi Arabia’s immensely powerful Public Investment Fund (PIF) radically altered the club’s fortunes, injecting unlimited, multi-million capital that swiftly saved the team from sporting ruin and astonishingly returned it to the Champions League.
