Historical Timeline
Year - 1892: The great schism caused by the rent for the legendary Anfield
Liverpool Football Club was founded purely as a result of a fierce and bitter commercial dispute in March 1892. Everton, who had been playing at Anfield since 1884, abruptly moved to their new ground at Goodison Park after refusing to pay the exorbitant rent increase demanded by the landowner, John Houlding. In front of a majestic but completely empty stadium, Houlding and director John McKenna founded Liverpool F.C., urgently recruiting a squad of seasoned Scottish professional players.
Year - 1959–1974: Bill Shankly’s messianic and philosophical re-founding
When the legendary manager Bill Shankly took charge in 1959, Liverpool were languishing in obscurity in the dilapidated grounds of the Second Division. Shankly magically transformed the club’s antiquated culture, rebuilding the squad both tactically and psychologically from the legendary ‘Boot Room’ changing room, and secured promotion by forging an unshakeable national dominance underpinned by a quasi-religious and socialist connection with the working class that sacredly filled the stands at The Kop.
Year - 1974–1983: Bob Paisley’s relentless reign as he conquered Europe
The quiet, astute and strategic assistant manager Bob Paisley took over the difficult and onerous mantle from Shankly, surprisingly ushering in the era of the greatest hegemonic dominance and overwhelming success in the history of English football. In just nine astonishing full seasons, Liverpool shattered every tactical record in Europe, winning three European Cups (1977, 1978, 1981) and six domestic titles through a tireless and methodical system of ball retention.
Year - 1985 and 1989: The harrowing tragedies at Heysel and Hillsborough
The golden age was tragically marred by two bloody and terrible tragedies that will never be forgotten, which socially tore apart the soul and integrity of the club and the city. In 1985, a violent attack by English supporters resulted in 39 deaths at the Heysel final, leading to the exclusion of English clubs from European competitions. Worse still, on 15 April 1989, fatal police negligence led to the horrific crush at Hillsborough, where 97 Liverpool supporters tragically lost their lives, crushed against the barbed-wire fences, sparking a never-ending legal battle for justice for the victims.
Year - 2005 and 2019: The mystical miracle of Istanbul and Klopp’s comeback
After decades of a severe and inexplicable trophy drought and public distress, the club achieved its greatest-ever feat by staging an epic and seemingly impossible comeback from 0–3 down in the nail-biting final of the 2005 Champions League against the mighty Milan in Turkey. In recent years, the intense and charismatic German manager Jürgen Klopp has rebuilt the club’s trademark aggressive attacking style (the ‘Gegenpressing’), securing the club’s sixth continental European title in 2019 and masterfully ending the fateful curse of thirty bleak years by being crowned Premier League champions in 2020.
