Historical Timeline
Year - 1881–1888 (Foundation and Origin of Colours): The club was originally founded in 1881 in Hackney, London, by members of the Glyn Cricket Club (comprising former students of Homerton College) to keep themselves active during the winter. After initially being known as the Eagle Club, on 3 March 1888 they adopted the name Orient F.C. following a proposal by the player Jack Dearing (an employee of the Orient Steam Navigation Company). Their historic home kit has traditionally consisted of red shirts; in their early days, they wore blue shirts with a large embroidered ‘O’, which gave rise to their famous nickname ‘The O’s’. Their crest features two wyverns – dragons with sea serpent tails – linking the heritage of the City of London with that of the shipping company.

Year - 1916 (The Historic Footballers’ Battalion): During the First World War, the club (then Clapton Orient) became the first English football club to enlist its entire squad and coaching staff en masse into the British armed forces, with 41 members joining the Middlesex Regiment (Footballers’ Battalion). At the Battle of the Somme in 1916, three of its star players (Richard McFadden, William Jonas and George Scott) were tragically killed in action.

Year - 1962 (One and Only Appearance in the Top Flight and FA Cup Semi-finals): Under the management of Johnny Carey, the club secured promotion to the First Division (the top flight) for the first and only time in 1962, after finishing as runners-up in the Second Division. This era of sporting milestones was complemented by the 1978 FA Cup, where the team reached the semi-finals of the competition for the first time ever after knocking out Chelsea FC, eventually losing to Arsenal FC.

Year - 2019 (National League champions and Justin Edinburgh): Following a painful relegation from the National League in 2017 due to financial difficulties, the club made a sporting comeback on 27 April 2019 under manager Justin Edinburgh, winning the National League title and returning to the Football League. Just six weeks after this feat, Edinburgh died suddenly of a heart attack, prompting the club to rename the main stand at Brisbane Road in his honour.
