Historical Timeline
Year - 1884: Founded as Leicester Fosse in a shed on Fosse Road
The club was officially founded in 1884 under the name Leicester Fosse by an enthusiastic group of former pupils of Wyggeston School, who met in a modest wooden shed on Fosse Road in the city of Leicester, situated in the county of Leicestershire (in the East Midlands of England, on the banks of the River Soar and flanked by the Central Plains). Led by Frank Gardner and other local youths, the idea arose due to the complete lack of a football club in the district that would allow them to compete formally in the region. The team adopted black and Fosse blue as their colours, playing their first informal matches at Victoria Park, thereby beginning to establish their roots in the local community.
Year - 1891–1919: Move to Filbert Street and the re-founding of Leicester City
In 1891, the club took the momentous decision to move to its historic and much-loved ground on Filbert Street, which was to become its home for 111 years. After weathering serious financial crises stemming from the First World War, the club was reorganised in 1919 with the support of the local authorities, adopting the definitive name of Leicester City Football Club, enshrining ‘The Fox’ in its crest as a symbol of the county and building one of the most loyal fan bases in the East Midlands.
Year - 1964: The first League Cup and the golden age of Gordon Banks
The 1960s marked a period of great success for the club. Under manager Matt Gillies, the team won the League Cup in 1964 after beating Stoke City in the final, and also reached three FA Cup finals. This remarkable generation of players was led in goal by the iconic goalkeeper Gordon Banks, regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the game, and benefited from the goals of the relentless striker Arthur Rowley.
Year - 2016: The greatest sporting triumph of all time – winning the Premier League
In the 2015–16 season, Leicester City wrote the most astonishing and miraculous chapter in the history of world football. Under the astute management of Claudio Ranieri and defying 5,000-to-1 odds that predicted their relegation, the team were crowned Premier League champions for the first time. Led by the goals of Jamie Vardy (who broke the record for scoring in 11 consecutive matches), the talent of Riyad Mahrez and the dedication of N’Golo Kanté, the ‘Foxes’ won the title in spectacular fashion, captivating the entire world with their lightning-fast counter-attacking football and impregnable tactical discipline at the King Power Stadium (opened in 2002).
Year - 2021: Their historic first FA Cup victory at Wembley
On 15 May 2021, Leicester City added the coveted FA Cup to their trophy cabinet for the first time in their 137-year history. Managed by Brendan Rodgers and backed by their fans at the unforgettable Wembley Stadium, the ‘Foxes’ defeated the formidable Chelsea 1–0 in a fiercely contested final, thanks to a superb and memorable long-range strike from Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, dedicating the historic victory to the memory of their beloved and much-missed chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
