Historical Timeline
Year - 1878: The founding of the students’ association at Portman Road and the club’s amateur beginnings
The club was officially founded on 16 October 1878 following a meeting at Ipswich Town Hall, in the county of Suffolk (in the east of England, on the banks of the River Orwell and in the fertile valley of south-east England). It began as a purely amateur organisation set up by former pupils of Ipswich School, led by Thomas Clement Cobbold, an influential Member of Parliament and brewer. Under Cobbold’s leadership, the team began playing its friendly association football matches at Portman Road, laying the foundations for an institution deeply rooted in the social life of the Suffolk region.
Year - 1936–1938: Institutional professionalisation and entry into the Football League
In 1936, under the chairmanship of John Murray Cobbold, the club took the momentous and historic decision to give up its amateur status and become a professional club. Ipswich Town acquired the land at Portman Road to build first-class facilities, successfully gaining entry to the Football League in 1938. This milestone completely transformed the club’s reach and established a strong sense of community and identity throughout the east of England.
Year - 1961–1962: The historic First Division title win under Alf Ramsey
The arrival of the visionary manager Sir Alf Ramsey in 1955 marked the start of the club’s first successful era. After securing promotion to the First Division, Ramsey led Ipswich Town to one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of British football: winning the First Division title in their debut season (1961–62), beating all the big names with a highly disciplined and effective brand of tactical football that catapulted Ramsey into the role of England manager.
Year - 1978: The historic FA Cup triumph under Bobby Robson
Under the tactical guidance of another club legend and English football icon, Sir Bobby Robson, Ipswich Town became a dominant force in European football. On 6 May 1978, the ‘Blues’ enjoyed their finest hour on the domestic stage by winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history, after a well-deserved 1–0 victory over the formidable Arsenal at Wembley thanks to a goal from Roger Osborne, sparking jubilation throughout Suffolk.
Year - 1981: Winning the UEFA Cup in Europe during the Robson era
In the 1980–81 season, the team managed by Bobby Robson reached the very pinnacle of international football. Led by the talented players Arnold Mühren, Frans Thijssen and John Wark, the ‘Tractor Boys’ enjoyed a brilliant campaign in the UEFA Cup (UEFA Cup), knocking out major rivals and lifting the prestigious continental trophy after defeating AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands in a two-legged final, thereby cementing that side’s status as one of the most respected in Europe.
