Historical Timeline
Year - 1883: Founded as Singers FC and its links to industry
The club was officially founded on 13 August 1883 under the name Singers FC by William Stanley, an administrator at the Singer Cycle Company in the city of Coventry, situated in the West Midlands (England, on the Sherbourne River valley and surrounded by the countryside of central England). It was established as a recreational and fitness initiative for the workers at the famous bicycle factory, with the aim of promoting sport and workers’ associations during the winter months. Under Stanley’s leadership, the team began playing its matches at Dowells Field in black and red colours, cementing its deep industrial roots.
Year - 1898–1899: The move to Coventry City and Highfield Road stadium
In 1898, with the aim of fully representing the entire community of Coventry and breaking away from the factory’s control, the club formally adopted its current name, Coventry City Football Club. A year later, in 1899, the board of directors took the momentous decision to move to Highfield Road, which was to become the club’s permanent and unmistakable home for over a century (until 2005) and the setting for some of its most memorable campaigns in the Football League.
Year - 1967: Jimmy Hill’s Sky Blue revolution and the rise to the top flight
The arrival of the visionary and innovative manager Jimmy Hill in 1961 changed the club’s history and image forever. Hill revolutionised the club by introducing sky blue as its permanent colour, composing the club’s official anthem, promoting the concept of an all-seater stadium and organising special trains for the supporters. His masterpiece culminated in the 1966–67 season when the club were crowned Second Division champions and were promoted to the First Division for the first time, marking the start of an uninterrupted 34-year spell in the top flight.
Year - 1987: The historic and unforgettable FA Cup victory at Wembley
On 16 May 1987, Coventry City wrote the most glorious and emotional chapter in its history. Led by the managerial duo of John Sillett and George Curtis, the ‘Sky Blues’ reached the FA Cup final at Wembley, where they faced the formidable Tottenham Hotspur. In one of the most thrilling and revered matches in the tournament’s history, Coventry secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory in extra time, thanks to goals from Dave Bennett, Keith Houchen (with an unforgettable bicycle kick) and a fortuitous own goal by Gary Mabbutt, lifting the prestigious national trophy.
Year - 2024: The hard-fought cup campaign and the semi-final against Manchester United
In the 2023–24 season, Coventry City rekindled their iconic cup spirit in a hard-fought campaign under the tactical guidance of Mark Robins. After knocking out Wolverhampton in the quarter-finals with two dramatic goals in stoppage time, the ‘Sky Blues’ reached the semi-finals at Wembley against Manchester United. Having trailed 3-0 with just twenty minutes remaining, Coventry staged an unforgettable comeback to draw 3-3, taking the match into extra time and then a penalty shoot-out, earning the utmost respect from the entire footballing world for their courage and tenacity.
