Historical Timeline
Year - 1912 (Founded as Abbey United): Founded in 1912 in the Abbey district of Cambridge, under the original name of Abbey United. The club was established on the initiative of a group of local youths and members of the Abbey Presbyterian Church on Newmarket Road to promote the game of football. In its early decades, the club competed in regional amateur leagues, wearing various colours before adopting its signature amber and black kit, reflecting its geographical roots in the east of the city.

The stadium became the epicentre of the club’s institutional consolidation and sporting growth, enabling it to make a gradual transition from regional amateur football to applying for formal admission to the professional league.

Year - 1951–1970 (Turned Professional and Joined the Football League): After turning professional in the late 1940s, the club officially changed its name to Cambridge United in 1951 to represent the entire university city.
