Historical Timeline

Year - 1882: From the oval rugby ball to the pioneering football

The institution’s deep roots emerged from the mud in May 1882 when the staunch members of the amateur club ‘Burnley Rovers’ took the resolute and historic decision to abandon the rough tackles and rustic collisions of rugby union, and voted unanimously to make the drastic and modern switch to the lethal yet orderly, fledgling new rules of the emerging sport of association football, making their home early on at the historic Turf Moor ground.

Year - 1914 and 1920–1921: Real Copero’s triumph and the league’s first reign of dominance

The pioneering team reached its first great pinnacle and moment of supreme glory when it made history by being crowned the brand-new champions of the hallowed FA Cup in 1914, before the astonished and awestruck eyes of the royal family and King George V himself, at the historic ground in south London (Crystal Palace). Subsequently, the same fierce, solid and lethal core of experienced players from the northern side, led by John Haworth, secured in astonishing, unwavering and resounding fashion the long-awaited, masterful and historic first English First Division title of the 1920–21 season.

Year - 1959–1960: The early days of ‘total football’ and the dazzling genius of Harry Potts

Under the innovative and impeccable organisational leadership of the legendary and unrivalled manager Harry Potts, the modest mining town witnessed, with wonderful elation, the rise of a prodigious, swift, spectacular and astonishing side (‘The Seventies Team in the Sixties’). Playing lethal football, with brilliant, immeasurable attacking play and a dazzling, unprecedented off-the-ball game that was astonishingly dazzling, they crowned a heroic, epic and glorious feat by masterfully, astonishingly and, in a dramatic and unexpected turn of events, clinching the unforgettable First Division title, snatched from their formidable rivals.

Year - 1987: On the brink of bankruptcy and a heroic rescue against Orient

Throughout the dark, devastating years and fateful, gloomy decades of the 1980s, the club hit rock bottom in dramatic fashion, suffering a series of suffocating, consecutive relegations. In that final, fateful and heart-stopping match at their home ground, Turf Moor, against an emboldened Leyton Orient in May 1987, they desperately, agonisingly and absolutely had to secure a crucial, historic, epic victory to avoid being shockingly, infamously, shamefully and unprecedentedly relegated to the non-league Conference.

Year - 2012–2022: Dyche’s pragmatic miracles at Turf Moor

The tough, energetic, gruff, tactical and demanding manager Sean Dyche built a rock-solid, heroic, combative and resilient defensive wall, heroically and relentlessly turning the bleak and gloomy outlook around. By tenaciously instilling values of hard work and a working-class ethos, he achieved an astonishing, epic and indelible feat: repeatedly, steadfastly and heroically securing promotion to the all-powerful and glittering Premier League, masterfully, euphorically and colossally stabilising the tiny, modest, humble and steadfast club, even leading them to their glorious, invaluable and memorable heroic historic continental debut, competing fiercely in the amazing tournaments and historic competitions of the great European game.
