Historical Timeline
Year - 1901: Forged on the English coast at the Seven Stars pub
The club was originally established on 24 June 1901, formally and initially founded under the original name of ‘Brighton and Hove United’, following a pivotal meeting organised at the local Seven Stars pub by promoters and sporting enthusiasts. Within a few weeks, they boldly changed the name to ‘Albion’ and established themselves firmly and historically to compete for decades on the modest yet hallowed, historic and much-loved pitch of the ‘Goldstone Ground’ stadium.
Year - 1979 and 1983: The first promotion to the top flight and the ‘And Smith must score’ final
Co-managed in successive spells by former managers Mike Bailey and Alan Mullery, the Seagulls made a sensational, historic and epic debut in the First Division in the late 1970s. Their miraculous peak came in the unforgettable and legendary 1983 FA Cup, where, astonishingly and miraculously, they reached the final at Wembley against Manchester United (the commentator’s dramatic and frustrated cry, ‘And Smith must score!’), although, paradoxically, they were relegated from the league that very same tragic year.
Year - The 1990s: Obscurantism, bankruptcy and the humiliating lack of a stadium
The club endured the most devastating, miserable, humiliating and dramatic period imaginable. Faced with imminent and suffocating financial ruin, the board infamously sold their beloved Goldstone Ground stadium to settle debts running into millions in 1997, literally and unprecedentedly leaving the team homeless, forcing them to wander shamefully, playing in distant towns (Gillingham) or precariously and uncomfortably making do with a cold municipal athletics stadium (Withdean) for more than thirteen long years.
Year - 2011: Tony Bloom and the glass paradise of the Amex Stadium
The painful instability and that infamous, undignified ordeal came to a dramatic end thanks to Tony Bloom’s providential financial rescue. This lifelong supporter, a prominent and shrewd tycoon, financed and spearheaded the costly, epic and indispensable construction of the astonishing, ultra-modern ‘Amex Stadium’. This giant structural leap catapulted the club – administratively, financially and in a truly heroic and masterful manner – to the glorious and long-dreamed-of threshold of the coveted and brilliant Premier League.
Year - 2017–present: Tactical brilliance, wonder and the long-awaited European debut
Having bravely and historically established themselves at the very top of world football following their promotion in 2017, the aggressive and impeccable innovative philosophy of modern managers (from Potter to Roberto De Zerbi), coupled with Europe’s most astonishing secret scouting ('scouting') in Europe forged a lethal squad that was immensely skilful and magical in its passing, managing to heroically and astonishingly dominate the league table and securing their first colossal, astonishing, magical and historic qualification for the legendary European cup competitions.
