Historical Timeline
Year - 1889: Founded in a pub by retired rowers
Brentford Football Club was, remarkably and unusually, founded in October 1889 by athletes and enthusiasts from the local ‘Brentford Rowing Club’. Gathered over a few drinks in the bar of the historic ‘Oxford & Cambridge Hotel’, the portly and inactive rowers unanimously decided to formally form a rudimentary football team to vigorously maintain their rustic physical fitness during the freezing and inactive British winter months.
Year - The 1930s: The golden age and the huge hits of Harry Curtis
Under the calm and astute, albeit demanding, leadership of the legendary manager Harry Curtis, the club enjoyed the most extraordinary and glorious decade of its early history. Climbing tenaciously and meteorically through the divisions, the modest London side achieved a splendid triumph by securing promotion to the top flight of the First Division, reaching its unassailable historic zenith by astonishingly finishing fifth in the English league table during the epic 1935–36 season.
Year - 1950s–1990s: A freefall, the ordeal of the lower leagues and survival
Following the resumption of football after the Second World War, the club experienced a prolonged, grim, dramatic, unstable and painful, unrelenting decline, sinking irrevocably and suffocatingly into the gloomy depths of the lower leagues (the third and fourth divisions) for more than five gruelling decades. Its very survival was even fatally and tragically threatened in 1967 when a devastating takeover bid by its wealthy London neighbourhood rival, Queens Park Rangers, sought to dissolve the club astonishingly and with impunity.
Year - 2012: The technological revolution of Matthew Benham’s ‘Moneyball’
The modern, far-reaching and definitive salvation and comprehensive transformation took place dramatically in 2012 when Matthew Benham, a former finance professional and fervent, devoted supporter of the club since childhood, acquired the club in its entirety. He astonishingly and boldly promoted and implemented a rigorous and infallible tactical recruitment system based strictly on mathematical data algorithms (‘Moneyball’), modernising the club’s approach to buying cheap gems from obscure divisions and heroically selling them on to Europe for millions.
Year - 2021–present: Frank’s heroic campaign and the historic, glorious Premier League season
The aggressive tactical approach bore its greatest, sweetest, most impressive and glorious fruits under the guidance of the intense Scandinavian strategist and manager Thomas Frank. After bidding a romantic farewell to its ageing, century-old Griffin Park ground to move into its new, majestic, state-of-the-art home, the Brentford Community Stadium, the club made a heroic, thrilling and unforgettable breakthrough into the Premier League in 2021, achieving an unparalleled promotion after a staggering 74 long and tortuous years of waiting.
