Historical Timeline
Year - 1899: A neighbourhood movement sparked by the street lamps of Boscombe
The modest club was founded in the autumn of 1899, originally as ‘Boscombe F.C.’. It was established by a small, enthusiastic group of local residents who had emerged from the ruins of the defunct local club, ‘Boscombe St John’s Institute’. With no funds and initially competing in purely amateur district leagues, the club laid its foundations on the picturesque south coast of England, changing its name decades later to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic.
Year - 1910 and 1923: The move to Dean Court and professional football
After regularly playing on makeshift pitches and borrowed wasteland, the club managed in 1910 to secure a large plot of land, generously and graciously donated by the wealthy local businessman J.E. Cooper-Dean, on which it built the historic ‘Dean Court’ stadium. This momentous structural leap enabled them, in 1923, to make a magnificent leap into the professional ranks when they were, to everyone’s surprise, accepted into the coveted Southern Third Division of the hallowed English Football League.
Year - The 1980s: Harry Redknapp’s ‘Miracle’ and the cup run
Submerged and suffocating in the dark and desperate depths of the third tier, the bold decision to appoint the inexperienced and novice former player Harry Redknapp as manager turned the club’s fortunes around. Redknapp revolutionised the squad in a surprising, miraculously and aggressively revolutionised the team, not only achieving historic and unexpected promotions, but also inflicting one of the most epic and humiliating defeats on the all-powerful Manchester United by heroically knocking them out of the hallowed and ancient FA Cup in 1984.
Year - 2008–2009: Imminent bankruptcy, a crippling points deduction and the abyss
The most dramatic, bleak and tragic moment of its entire existence occurred during the 2008–09 season. Plagued and suffocated by ruinous and staggering debts running into the millions, the club plunged into a devastating administrative collapse, suffering the cruel and lethal punishment of a 17-point deduction in the fourth division. On the inescapable and tragic brink of dissolution and ultimate bankruptcy, the desperate board of directors heroically and inexplicably placed their faith in the very young and almost inexperienced 31-year-old former player, Eddie Howe.
Year - 2009–2015: Eddie Howe’s fairytale and the miracle promotion
What followed was the most glorious, spectacular and relentless feat in the modern era of humble British football. Eddie Howe, having miraculously avoided the dramatic and imminent relegation that fateful year, built a lethal and dazzling squad capable of playing attractive, attacking football, masterfully, epically and astonishingly stringing together three massive promotions in just six years, propelling the tiny coastal club, in an incredible and historic feat, into the glittering elite of the Premier League in 2015.
