Historical Timeline
Year - 1874: Founded beneath the lanterns of Handsworth Chapel
Aston Villa was founded in March 1874 by four enthusiastic members of the cricket team at the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel (Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood) by the warm glow of a gas lamp in Handsworth, Birmingham. Their main aim was to set up a football club that would allow them to stay physically active during the cold winter months when the cricket season ended.
Year - 1888: The pioneering founding of the Football League
The club’s most monumental and enduring contribution to world football came in 1888. Frustrated by the constant cancellations of frivolous friendly matches, the chairman and manager of Aston Villa, the Scotsman William McGregor, drafted and sent letters to the leading clubs proposing the creation of the world’s first officially organised league, thereby establishing and founding, in a historic and monumental move, the English ‘Football League’.
Year - 1884–1926: The ‘Golden Dictatorship’ of George Ramsay
Under the enduring and majestic leadership of Scottish manager and coach George Ramsay, Aston Villa emerged as the first undisputed giant in the history of English football. Ramsay established a style of lightning-fast short passing that laid the foundations for an immeasurable golden age, securing the astonishing and overwhelming tally of six First Division titles and six FA Cups, establishing the club as the most successful and lethal side in the world before the First World War.
Year - 1982: The unforgettable European Cup miracle in Rotterdam
After decades of sharp decline and relegation to the third division, the team staged a heroic resurgence in the early 1980s. Against all logical odds and under the urgent tactical guidance of manager Tony Barton, Villa surprisingly reached the 1982 European Cup final, heroically and agonisingly defeating the all-powerful Bayern Munich 1–0 with a legendary goal from Peter Withe and a career-defining performance from the young substitute goalkeeper Nigel Spink.
Year - 2016–present: From the darkness of relegation to a comeback
In 2016, the club suffered a bitter, dramatic and devastating relegation to the second tier, marking the lowest point in its recent history following appalling administrative mismanagement. Following a gruelling rebuilding process in the Championship, the recent and masterful arrival of Basque manager Unai Emery in 2022 revolutionised the club tactically, restoring the old Birmingham giant to the long-awaited Champions League in spectacular and resounding fashion.
