Historical Timeline
Year - 1879 (Foundation and Origin of Colours): Founded in 1879 in Swindon, Wiltshire, by the clergyman William Pitt, vicar of Christchurch, following a meeting at the King William Street School with railway workers from the Great Western Railway (GWR). The aim was to provide entertainment and sporting activities for the growing working-class population employed in the railway workshops. Originally, they played in black and white kits (Pitt’s clerical colours) and were known as Swindon AFC, before adopting the name Swindon Town F.C. in 1883 and establishing the red and white kit that gave rise to their nickname, ‘The Robins’.
