Historical Timeline
Year - 1940 (Foundation and Origin of Colours): Founded in 1940 in the Eccles district of Salford, originally under the name Salford Central. The club was founded with the aim of organising an amateur team that would enable local youngsters to compete in the Eccles and District Leagues. They adopted orange (tangerine) shirts and black shorts as their kit, colours they wore with pride for more than four decades of amateur football.

Year - 1989 (Transition to Salford City and ‘The Ammies’): After renaming itself Salford Amateurs in the 1960s (a period which saw the coining of its definitive nickname, ‘The Ammies’), the club changed its name to Salford City F.C. in 1989. This transition marked the start of the club’s consolidation in the top regional divisions of the north of England, having played their home matches at Moor Lane (Peninsula Stadium) since 1978.

Year - 2014 (The ‘Class of 92’ Takeover and the Red Years): In 2014, a consortium of former Manchester United players known as the ‘Class of 92’ (Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, later joined by David Beckham) acquired ownership of the club. The new owners changed the traditional colours to a red shirt and white shorts, and drove a significant investment programme that resulted in four promotions in five seasons.

Year - 2025 (The Historic Return to Orange and a New Era): Following promotion to the Football League (EFL League Two) in 2019, and after the club was acquired in May 2025 by a consortium led by David Beckham and Gary Neville, the club held a historic public vote. 77.1 per cent of supporters voted in favour of restoring the club’s historic identity, paving the way for an official return to the colour orange (tangerine) from the start of the 2026–27 season.
