Historical Timeline
Year - 1925 (Foundation and Origin of Colours): Officially founded on 27 May 1925 in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, through the merger of the town’s two rival clubs: Rotherham County (founded in 1877 as Thornhill) and Rotherham Town (founded in 1899). The merger took place due to financial difficulties and the fact that it was no longer viable to maintain two professional clubs in the town. The new club adopted the name Rotherham United F.C., taking over County’s place in the Football League. Initially, they wore yellow (amber) and black, but in 1930 they switched to their definitive red kit with white sleeves, cementing their historic nickname ‘The Millers’ in honour of the local milling and iron industries.

Year - 1961 (First League Cup runner-up): The club reached the final of the inaugural Football League Cup in the 1960–61 season. In the first leg, played at their historic Millmoor ground, they beat Aston Villa 2–0 with goals from Alan Webster and Ken Waterhouse. On 5 September 1961, in the second leg at Villa Park, they lost 3–0 after extra time, finishing as creditable runners-up in a tournament that brought together the country’s finest clubs.

Year - 1981 (Third Division Championship): In the 1980–81 season, under the management of Ian Porterfield, the club won the Football League Third Division title. They sealed the title on 2 May 1981 with a 2–1 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Millmoor, capping off a club-record run of nine consecutive wins in the final stretch of the season.

Year - 2012 (The New York Stadium and the Return to the Championship): In July 2012, after 101 years at Millmoor, the club opened its modern stadium, the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Under manager Steve Evans, the squad achieved two successive promotions, culminating on 25 May 2014 at Wembley with a 4–3 victory over Leyton Orient on penalties (following a 2–2 draw after extra time), securing their return to the EFL Championship.
