Historical Timeline
Year - 1912 (Foundation and Origins of Colours): Founded in 1912 in Newport, South Wales, following a meeting at the Tredegar Arms Hotel. Its creation was driven by industrialists and steelworkers from John Lysaght’s Steelworks (mostly English and Scottish immigrants who were supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers) who sought to establish a football club in a region dominated by rugby. The club adopted the name Newport County F.C., choosing the colours amber and black to reflect the borough’s official colours and the colour scheme of Wolverhampton.

Year - 1981 (European heyday in the Cup Winners’ Cup): After winning the Welsh Cup in 1980 under manager Len Ashurst, the team enjoyed a historic European campaign in the European Cup Winners’ Cup (UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup) during the 1980–81 season. The club reached the quarter-finals of the competition, where they were knocked out by Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany in a memorable tie played at Somerton Park.

Year - 1989 (Bankruptcy and Rebirth in Exile): In February 1989, crippled by debt and following relegation from the Football League, the original club went into liquidation. Barely three months later, in June 1989, a consortium of supporters re-founded the club under the name Newport A.F.C. As local authorities barred them from using their Somerton Park ground, they had to play their home matches outside Wales, in Gloucestershire, earning themselves the nickname ‘The Exiles’.

Year - 2013 (Return to the Football League): In 1999, once the legal issues surrounding the liquidation had been resolved, the club reverted to its traditional name of Newport County A.F.C. In the 2012–13 season, under the management of Justin Edinburgh, the team won the Conference National play-off final at Wembley against Wrexham, securing a historic return to professional football in the Football League (EFL League Two) after a 25-year absence.
