Historical Timeline
Year - 1878 (Foundation and Origin of the Name): Founded in 1878 in the town of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, under the original name of Grimsby Pelham F.C., during a meeting at the Wellington Arms pub on Freeman Street. The club was founded by members of the Worsley Cricket Club with the aim of establishing a football team that would allow them to stay active during the winter. They adopted the word ‘Pelham’ in honour of the landowning family of the Earl of Yarborough, changing their name to Grimsby Town F.C. in 1879 to reflect a broader representation of the local community.

Year - 1910 (Adoption of the Stripes and the Mariner Identity): After wearing various colour combinations (including blue and brown halves, and blue and white hoops), the club formally adopted its black and white vertical striped shirt in 1910. These understated, hard-wearing colours quickly became associated with the gruelling work of North Sea fishermen, cementing the club’s definitive nickname, ‘The Mariners’.

Year - 1899 (Move to Blundell Park): After playing temporarily at Clee Park and Abbey Park during its early years, the club opened its permanent ground, Blundell Park, in 1899. Located in the neighbouring coastal town of Cleethorpes, it was to become one of the oldest and most iconic grounds in English football.

Year - 1930 (The Golden Age): During the 1930s, the club enjoyed its most successful period in sporting terms under the leadership of manager Frank Womack. Grimsby Town competed in the First Division (the top national division) for several consecutive seasons and reached the FA Cup semi-finals on two occasions (1936 and 1939), drawing record crowds at Blundell Park.
