Historical Timeline
Year - 1901 (Foundation and Origin of Colours): The club was originally founded in 1901 in Exeter, Devon, under the name St Sidwell’s United, established by footballers from local school clubs and members of the Methodist church. On 31 May 1904, during a meeting at the Red Lion Hotel on Sidwell Street, it was agreed to change the name to Exeter City F.C. to reflect its status as a city club, and Exeter United F.C. (founded in 1890), establishing St James’ Park as its home ground. They originally wore green and white, but switched to their iconic red and white stripes in November 1910 to avoid superstitions and distinguish themselves from local rivals, which cemented their traditional nickname of ‘The Grecians’.

Year - 1914 (Historic Tour of South America): In July 1914, the club undertook a unique exhibition tour of South America. On 21 July 1914, at the Laranjeiras Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Exeter City played the match that the Brazilian Football Confederation officially records as the first match in the history of the Brazilian national team, which ended in a 2–0 home victory.

Year - 1931 (FA Cup quarter-finals): During the 1930–31 season, whilst competing in the Third Division South, the club enjoyed a historic run in the FA Cup, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time. On 7 March 1931, they played the quarter-final play-off at St James’ Park against Sunderland AFC in front of 20,984 spectators, setting the record for the highest official attendance in the stadium’s history.

Year - 2003 (Crisis and Fan Ownership): Faced with a severe debt crisis that threatened to lead to the club’s liquidation following its relegation in 2003, the ‘Exeter City Supporters’ Trust’ took over the administrative control of the club on 14 May 2003, becoming a pioneer of community ownership. The financial viability of this model was cemented following a 0–0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup in 2005, the matchday takings from which completely cleared the club’s debts.
