Historical Timeline
Year - 1877 (Foundation and Origin of the Name): Founded in August 1877 in Crewe, Cheshire, as a branch of the Crewe Alexandra Cricket Club, with the active participation of workers from the town’s locomotive workshops. The original aim was to establish a football team to keep the players fit during the winter months. The club adopted the name ‘Alexandra’ in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark (wife of the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII), and chose red for its shirts from the very beginning, quickly earning the nickname ‘The Railwaymen’ due to the central role of the railway in local urban development.

Year - 1892 (Founders of the Second Division): After formally separating from the cricket club in 1891 and establishing its professional status, the club became one of the founding members of the Football League Second Division in 1892, playing its first professional matches in the English league.

Year - 1921 (Return to the Football League): After losing its place in the professional league in 1896 and competing in lower-tier regional leagues for 25 years, the club was readmitted to the Football League in 1921. The team joined the newly formed Third Division North, establishing its permanent home at Gresty Road (Mornflake Stadium).

Year - 1983 (The Dario Gradi Era): In June 1983, the Italian-Englishman Dario Gradi took over as the club’s manager, beginning a historic spell in charge that lasted for 24 consecutive years. Gradi transformed the club’s structure, focusing on scouting young talent and securing promotion to the second tier of English football (the EFL Championship) in 1997 and 2003.
