Historical Timeline
Year - 1887 (Foundation and Origin of the Name): Founded in 1887 in the spa town of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on the initiative of schoolteacher Albert Close White. White had discovered and learnt the formal rules of association football whilst training to be a teacher in London. On his return to his hometown, he organised the first trial matches at the East Gloucestershire Cricket Ground, thus establishing the club under the name Cheltenham Town F.C. to represent the town in sport.

Year - 1932 (The Identity of the Robins and Professionalism): After decades of competing at amateur level in ruby-red shirts (which earned them their original nickname, ‘The Rubies’), the club turned professional in 1932 by joining the Birmingham Combination. With this transition, they changed their kits to a red-and-white striped design, which inspired their definitive and current nickname, ‘The Robins’, and coincided with their move to Whaddon Road stadium.

Year - 1985 (Consolidation as a semi-professional club): After progressing through the divisions of the Southern League, the club reached the Alliance Premier League (the predecessor of the National League) for the first time in 1985. Although the club returned to regional leagues in 1992, this period consolidated the club’s sporting structure and support base in Gloucestershire.

Year - 1999 (Historic Promotion to the Football League): In the 1998–99 season, under manager Steve Cotterill, the team won the Football Conference title after beating Yeovil Town. This victory granted Cheltenham Town F.C. historic direct entry into the Football League’s professional league system for the first time in its more than 100-year history.
