Historical Timeline
Year - 1887: Founding of the Steam Engine and the origin of the nickname and colours
The club was founded in 1887 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, following a meeting of young workers from the local furniture-making industry held at the Steam Engine pub on Station Road. This strong link with the cabinet-making sector gave rise to its enduring nickname, ‘The Chairboys’. The club adopted the name Wycombe Wanderers in homage to the famous Wanderers F.C. (winners of the first FA Cup in history), who had visited the town in 1877. For their kit, they adopted shirts with a quarter-and-quarter design in sky blue and navy blue, a direct reference to the colours of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Year - 1993 (May): Historic promotion to the Football League’s professional ranks
Under the management of Martin O’Neill, the club secured promotion to professional football. In the 1992–93 season, Wycombe Wanderers were crowned Football Conference champions after amassing 92 points from 42 matches, securing automatic promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history – an achievement capped off that same month by winning the FA Trophy at Wembley.
Year - 2001 (8 April): Historic FA Cup semi-finals against Liverpool
Playing in the Second Division and under the management of Lawrie Sanchez, the club enjoyed a memorable FA Cup campaign in the 2000–01 season, reaching the semi-finals of the competition. After knocking out higher-division sides such as Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City, the team played the semi-final on 8 April 2001 at Villa Park against Liverpool FC, suffering a narrow 2–1 defeat.
Year - 2007 (23 January): League Cup semi-finals and a draw against Chelsea
Under the management of Paul Lambert, the team reached the semi-finals of the League Cup (Carling Cup) for the first time in its history during the 2006–07 season. In the first leg, played on 10 January 2007 at Adams Park in front of a record crowd of 9,771, Wycombe Wanderers drew 1–1 with Premier League side Chelsea FC, with a goal from midfielder Jermaine Easter, before going on to lose the return leg at Stamford Bridge 4–0.
Year - 2020 (13 July): Historic promotion to the EFL Championship
On 13 July 2020, under the guidance of manager Gareth Ainsworth, the club secured promotion to the second tier of English football (the EFL Championship) for the first time in its 133-year history. In the League One play-off final, played behind closed doors at Wembley Stadium, Wycombe Wanderers defeated Oxford United 2–1 with goals from Anthony Stewart and a penalty converted by Joe Jacobson in the 54th minute.
