Historical Timeline
Year - 2002 (30 May): Founded at The Fox and Grapes and its inherited identity
The club was founded on Thursday 30 May 2002 in Wimbledon, London, on the initiative of members of the Wimbledon Independent Supporters’ Association (WISA), including Kris Stewart, Marc Jones, Trevor Williams and Ivor Heller. The creation of the new community-owned club (‘phoenix club’) arose as a direct protest against the decision by an independent commission of the Football Association to authorise the relocation of the original Wimbledon F.C. to the town of Milton Keynes. The new club adopted the name AFC Wimbledon and adopted royal blue and yellow, the historic colours of the original club founded in 1889.
Year - 2003–2004: National record of 78 consecutive league matches without defeat
Competing in the regional divisions of the Combined Counties League, the club set an all-time record for top-flight English football. Between 22 February 2003 and 4 December 2004, the side managed by Terry Eames went on an unbeaten run of 78 consecutive league matches (with 69 wins and 9 draws), surpassing the previous record of 75 matches set by AFC Sudbury.
Year - 2011 (21 May): Historic promotion to the Football League
Just nine years after its formation, having started in the ninth tier, the club secured promotion to the Football League (League Two). On 21 May 2011, in the Conference Premier play-off final held at the Manchester City Stadium, AFC Wimbledon defeated Luton Town 4–3 on penalties after the match had ended in a 0–0 draw.
Year - 2016 (30 May): Promotion to League One at Wembley Stadium
On 30 May 2016, the fourteenth anniversary of the club’s official foundation, the squad managed by Neal Ardley secured promotion to League One (third tier). The promotion was secured following a 2–0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium, with goals from striker Lyle Taylor and a penalty converted by Adebayo Akinfenwa.
Year - 2020 (3 November): Historic return to Plough Lane
After 29 years playing at rented grounds at Selhurst Park and Kingsmeadow, the club finalised its return to its home district in south London. On 3 November 2020, AFC Wimbledon played their first official match at their new, rebuilt Plough Lane stadium (located 250 metres from the site of the former ground of the same name), drawing 2–2 with Doncaster Rovers in League One. The construction of the stadium was partly funded by direct contributions from supporters via capital bonds (the Plough Lane Bond).
