Historical Timeline
Year - 1883: Founded as Heaton Norris Rovers and the origins of the club’s identity
The club was founded in 1883 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, on the initiative of a group of teenage pupils at the Sunday school of the Wycliffe Congregational Chapel. The founding meeting took place at McLaughlin’s Café, on the corner of Heaton Lane and Wellington Road South, and the club was initially named Heaton Norris Rovers. In 1890, following the town’s elevation to the status of a County Borough, the club changed its official name to Stockport County Football Club. In its early years, the team wore red and white striped kits, before adopting its classic blue and white colours from 1914 onwards.
Year - 1922 (May): First league title in the Third Division North
In the 1921–22 season, the club won its first-ever league title by being crowned champions of the newly formed Football League Third Division North. Under the leadership of manager Albert Williams, the team finished top of the table with 56 points, securing their first promotion to the second tier of English football and establishing Edgeley Park as their permanent home ground.
Year - 1997 (March): League Cup semi-finals and promotion to the second tier
In the 1996–97 season, under the management of Dave Jones, the club enjoyed what is regarded as one of the most successful campaigns in its history. In the League Cup (Coca-Cola Cup), they reached the semi-finals after knocking out three Premier League sides (Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Southampton), only to lose narrowly to Middlesbrough in the semi-finals. At the same time, it finished as runners-up in Division Two with 82 points, securing promotion to the second tier of English football.
Year - 2022 (15 May): Return to professional football in the Football League
After being relegated from the Football League in 2011 and even dropping down to the sixth tier (National League North) in 2013 due to financial difficulties, the club completed its return to the professional ranks. On 15 May 2022, under the management of Dave Challinor, Stockport County were crowned National League champions after beating FC Halifax Town 2–0 at Edgeley Park in front of a record crowd of 10,000, bringing to an end 11 years in non-league football.
Year - 2024 (13 April): League Two champions and automatic promotion
The club secured promotion to EFL League One on 13 April 2024 following a 2–0 victory over Morecambe FC, securing one of the automatic promotion places. Under manager Dave Challinor and thanks to investment from owner Mark Stott, the squad finished the regular season as League Two champions with 92 points from 46 matches.
