Historical Timeline
Year - 1976: Founded as Stevenage Borough and the stadium was re-adopted
The club was founded in 1976 as Stevenage Borough Football Club in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Its creation was spearheaded by a group of local volunteers and businesspeople determined to keep top-flight football in the town following the dissolution through bankruptcy, earlier that same year, of the previous club, Stevenage Athletic. The new club adopted a red and white kit with gold trim, and took on a lease for the Broadhall Way ground, which required refurbishment before it could be re-approved for senior football in 1980.
Year - 1996 (April): Conference champions and promotion denied
Under the management of Paul Fairclough, the club won its first Conference National title in the 1995–96 season. However, despite the sporting achievement of finishing top of the league, the Football League refused to promote the club to the fourth tier of the professional league because the Broadhall Way ground did not meet the capacity requirements and infrastructure regulations in force at the time.
Year - 2007 (12 May): Historic victory in the FA Trophy final at the new Wembley Stadium
The club won the FA Trophy by beating Kidderminster Harriers 3–2 in the final. The match, played in front of a record attendance for the competition of 53,262 spectators, was the first competitive final to be held at the newly opened Wembley Stadium. With this victory, Stevenage Borough became the first team in history to win an official match at that national sports venue.
Year - 2010 (17 April): First promotion to the Football League and a change of name
The club secured the 2009–10 Conference National title and, as a result, promotion to the Football League (League Two) for the first time in its history. Promotion was confirmed on 17 April 2010 following a 2–0 away win against Kidderminster Harriers, with goals from Charlie Griffin and Joel Byrom. To coincide with its entry into the professional league on 1 June 2010, the club removed the word ‘Borough’ from its official name, becoming Stevenage Football Club.
Year - 2011 (28 May): Consecutive promotion to League One at Old Trafford
In its debut season in professional football (2010–11) and under manager Graham Westley, the club reached the final of the League Two promotion play-offs. On 28 May 2011, in the decider played at Old Trafford in Manchester, Stevenage beat Torquay United 1–0 thanks to a goal from defender John Mousinho in the 41st minute, securing their promotion to League One.
