Historical Timeline
Year - 1886 (September): Founding at the Borough Arms Coffee Tavern and the colours of the coat of arms
The club was founded in early September 1886 in Plymouth, Devon, at a meeting held at the Borough Arms Coffee Tavern on Bedford Street. It was founded by F. Howard Grose and William Pethybridge, former pupils of secondary schools in Plymouth and Devonport, with the aim of forming an association that would allow them to continue playing football after leaving school. The name ‘Argyle’ was adopted either because of the proximity of Argyle Terrace, where several of the founders lived, or because of the Victorian fashion of the time for names with a Scottish ring to them. The team wore green and black, colours taken directly from the official coat of arms of the city of Plymouth.
Year - 1903 (January): Professionalisation and admission to the Southern League
In January 1903, the club was reorganised as a limited company and formally changed its name to Plymouth Argyle Football Club, adopting a professional structure. The club successfully applied for membership of the Southern League, securing a direct place in its First Division for the 1903–04 season and playing its first official professional match on 1 September 1903 against Northampton Town, winning 2–0.
Year - 1984 (11 April): Historic FA Cup semi-final from the third division
The club enjoyed a memorable FA Cup campaign in the 1983–84 season, reaching the semi-finals whilst competing in the Third Division (League One). Along the way, they knocked out teams from higher divisions, including West Bromwich Albion and Derby County. Their cup run came to an end on 11 April 1984 at Villa Park, where they were defeated 1–0 by First Division side Watford FC in front of 41,000 spectators.
Year - 2004 (24 April): Division Two champions and promotion to the Championship
Under the management of Paul Sturrock, the team were crowned champions of the Football League Second Division in the 2003–04 season. The title and their return to the second tier of English football after a twelve-year absence were secured on 24 April 2004 following a 2–0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Home Park, with goals from Mickey Evans and David Friio.
Year - 2023 (29 April): League One title with 101 points
In the 2022–23 League One season, under the management of Steven Schumacher, the club were crowned champions and secured automatic promotion to the EFL Championship. The team completed the regular season on 29 April 2023 after beating Burton Albion 1-0, setting a club record of 101 points in a single league campaign.
