Historical Timeline
Year - 1864: The Turf Hotel is founded and the Welsh pioneer is born
On 4 October 1864, members of the Wrexham Cricket Club gathered at the historic Turf Hotel, a popular meeting place situated next to the local racecourse known as the Racecourse Ground, in North Wales. The purpose of the meeting, convened by the cricket club’s secretary, Edward Manners, and his colleague Thomas Hanmer, was to address a pressing challenge: the complete lack of recreational activities and competitive sport for the cricket club’s players during the long, damp Welsh winter. At that founding gathering, it was formally agreed to establish an association football section under the name Wrexham Football Club, establishing itself not only as the first organised football team in Welsh history, but also as the third-oldest professional club in the entire world. From the very outset, Manners instilled in the club a strong sense of community roots, attracting both local middle-class gentlemen and industrial and mining workers from the Wrexham coalfield. This social foundation and the uninterrupted use of the Racecourse Ground as its spiritual home made the club the key driving force behind Welsh football, spurring the creation of the Football Association of Wales (FAW) in 1876 and organising the Welsh national team’s first match.
Year - 1877–1878: The inaugural match and dominance in the Welsh Cup
Wrexham played a vital role in the development of Welsh football, playing an active part in the founding of the Football Association of Wales (FAW) in 1876. In 1877, they played the first match in the history of the Welsh Cup, going on to be crowned champions of the inaugural edition in 1878 after beating Druids FC 1–0 in the final. Over the decades, Wrexham established a renowned dominance in this national competition, winning it a record-breaking 23 times, before FA regulations formally barred clubs competing in the English league system from contesting their country of origin’s cup.
Year - 1984: The ‘Giant-Killers’ continental triumph against Porto
In the 1984–85 season, having qualified for the European Cup Winners’ Cup as runners-up in the Welsh Cup, Wrexham — who were then playing in the Fourth Division (the English fourth tier) and were in the throes of a severe financial crisis — staged one of the most remarkable runs in European football. In the first round of the competition, they knocked out the formidable FC Porto of Portugal (the reigning runners-up in the same Cup Winners’ Cup): they won 1–0 at the Racecourse Ground thanks to a goal from Jim Steel and, after losing a thrilling 4–3 match at the Estádio das Antas in Porto, they managed to progress to the round of 16 thanks to the away goals rule in a feat that will never be repeated.
Year - 1992: The stunning FA Cup victory over reigning champions Arsenal
On 4 January 1992, in the third round of the FA Cup, the Racecourse Ground was the scene of what is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest upsets in the history of British football. A humble Wrexham side, languishing at the bottom of the English fourth tier, knocked out the reigning and formidable Premier League champions, George Graham’s Arsenal. The ‘Gunners’ were comfortably leading 1–0, but in the 82nd minute, veteran midfielder Mickey Thomas curled a superb free-kick into the top corner past goalkeeper David Seaman. Barely two minutes later, striker Steve Watkin slotted the ball across goal to spark wild celebrations and seal the historic 2–1 victory.
Year - 2020–present: The Hollywood revolution and the feat of three consecutive promotions
In November 2020, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club from the Wrexham Supporters Trust as part of a plan to invest in the club, the local community and the organisation. Buoyed by the media attention generated by the documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, the club experienced remarkable growth on an international scale. This momentum led to a string of sporting achievements that stands out in modern football: after winning the National League in the 2022–23 season (returning to the Football League after a 15-year absence), the team secured immediate promotion to League One in the 2023–24 season and, subsequently, secured a further direct promotion to the EFL Championship by finishing as League One runners-up in the 2024–25 season, achieving three consecutive promotions in three years.
