Historical Timeline
Year - 1912: The club’s founding at the Castle Hotel pub and Toshack’s debut
The club was officially founded in 1912 under the name Swansea Town during a historic meeting at the Castle Hotel pub in the coastal town of Swansea, situated in the county of West Glamorgan, Wales (at the mouth of the River Tawe and adjacent to the magnificent Swansea Bay). It was established on the initiative of local traders and promoters, led by Thomas Hammer, with the firm intention of creating a professional football club in a region of south-west Wales historically dominated by rugby. The club began playing its home matches at Vetch Field, laying foundations deeply rooted in the community and civic pride of the working class.
Year - 1981: The historic and remarkable promotion to the First Division under Toshack
The arrival of Welsh football legend John Toshack as player-manager in 1978 marked the beginning of the club’s most successful period in domestic football. Leading the team on a meteoric rise unprecedented in British football, Toshack guided the ‘Swans’ from the fourth tier to secure their historic promotion to the First Division in the 1980–81 season, finishing in a remarkable sixth place in the league in their debut season and competing on equal terms with the giants of the era.
Year - 2005: The emotional farewell to Vetch Field and the move to Carrow Road
In July 2005, after 93 years of history and unforgettable memories in the famous, cramped general admission stands at Vetch Field, the club moved to its current, imposing home: the Liberty Stadium (now Swansea.com Stadium). This historic move symbolised the club’s institutional revival and commercial growth, becoming the stronghold from which one of Wales’ most loyal sets of supporters backed the campaigns that would establish the club in the EFL Championship and the Premier League.
Year - 2013: The historic and triumphant League Cup victory
On 24 February 2013, on the legendary pitch at Wembley, Swansea City wrote the most glorious chapter in its international and cup history. Under the guidance of manager Michael Laudrup, the ‘Swans’ won the League Cup (Capital One Cup) by defeating Bradford City in a resounding 5–0 victory in the final, securing the club’s first major trophy in its 101-year history, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League and proudly representing Welsh football across Europe.
