Historical Timeline
Year - 1889: The club’s foundation at the Adelphi Hotel and the move to Bramall Lane
The club was officially founded on 22 March 1889 following a historic meeting of the directors of Sheffield United Cricket Club at the Adelphi Hotel in the city of Sheffield, situated in the county of South Yorkshire (in the north of England, on the banks of the River Sheaf and at the heart of the British northern steel-producing region). It was established on the initiative of the cricket committee, led by Sir Charles Clegg, with the express aim of setting up an association football club that would allow the Bramall Lane ground to be used profitably during the winter season, when cricket was suspended due to the cold and rain. The club adopted red and white vertical stripes, forging a strong identity associated with the toughness and working-class spirit of the local steelworkers in the ‘City of Steel’.
Year - 1898: The historic victory in the English First Division
Towards the end of the 19th century, Sheffield United quickly established itself amongst the very best in English football. Under the leadership of manager Joseph Wostinholm, the ‘Blades’ enjoyed a brilliant campaign in the 1897–98 season, being crowned champions of the Football League First Division for the first and only time in their history, outperforming the top sides with an extremely well-organised and intelligent brand of football that cemented the club’s reputation throughout the United Kingdom.
Year - 1899–1925: The golden age of the FA Cups and the legend of Fatty Foulke
The early 20th century marked the most successful period in the club’s history in terms of domestic cup success. Under manager John Nicholson, the team won four FA Cup titles in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925, playing in some memorable finals. This successful generation of players was led in goal by the iconic William ‘Fatty’ Foulke, a goalkeeper of colossal stature and impressive agility who became an enduring legend from the early days of the sport.
Year - Bramall Lane: The oldest football stadium in the world
Originally opened in 1855 as a cricket ground and hosting football matches since 1862 (including the first-ever Youdan Cup), Bramall Lane holds the immense official honour of being the world’s oldest football stadium still hosting professional matches without interruption. The ground, which has witnessed the complete evolution of the rules and the professionalisation of the game, is the immovable spiritual and physical home upon which rests the soul, identity and fighting spirit of the Sheffield United supporters.
