Historical Timeline
Year - 1886: Founding and community integration in West London
The club was officially founded in 1886 following the merger of two local youth teams, Christchurch Rangers and St Jude’s Institute, in the Queen’s Park district of west London (England, within the Greater London area and close to the Great Union Canal). The proposal emerged from a members’ meeting led by Jack McDonald, with the firm aim of pooling efforts, sporting resources and playing facilities to establish a truly strong and competitive football club in the area. It was named ‘Queens Park Rangers’ because most of the original players came from that parish and were constantly travelling to various pitches across west London, forging their itinerant identity and strong sense of community.
Year - 1917: The permanent move and the historic relocation to Loftus Road
After moving between nearly twenty different grounds in its early years, the club took the momentous decision in 1917 to settle permanently at Loftus Road in Shepherd’s Bush. Loftus Road quickly became their iconic home ground and an impregnable fortress due to the extreme proximity of its stands to the pitch, serving as the setting for their most memorable campaigns in the Football League and the Premier League.
Year - 1967: The memorable League Cup run as a newly promoted club
On 4 March 1967, Queens Park Rangers wrote one of the most memorable chapters in British cup football. Playing in the Third Division (the third tier of English football), the team managed by Alec Stock reached the League Cup final at Wembley, where they faced top-flight side West Bromwich Albion. After falling 2–0 behind, the ‘Rangers’ staged a hard-fought and unforgettable comeback in the second half to win 3–2 thanks to goals from Roger Morgan, Rodney Marsh and Mark Lazarus, becoming the first club in their division to win a major national trophy.
Year - 1976: First Division runners-up under Stan Bowles
The 1975–76 season stands out as the most brilliant chapter in the club’s footballing history. Under the management of the innovative Dave Sexton and led on the pitch by the virtuoso winger and Loftus Road icon, Stan Bowles, QPR went head-to-head with the formidable Liverpool for the First Division title. Although they finished as runners-up by a mere single point on the final day of the league season, Bowles’s side earned the respect and absolute admiration of the whole country for their brilliant, skilful and intelligent attacking football.
