Historical Timeline
Year - 1898: Founding on High Street and the naval port initiative
The club was officially founded on 5 April 1898 during a meeting of directors at 12 High Street in the coastal town of Portsmouth, situated on Portsea Island in the county of Hampshire (in the south of England, on the shores of the English Channel and home to Britain’s most iconic naval port). It was established on the initiative of a group of local merchants and developers, led by John Brickwood (owner of Brickwoods Brewery), with the aim of creating a professional football club to replace the defunct Royal Artillery Portsmouth and uphold the port’s sporting prestige. The team adopted blue and white colours and the traditional crest featuring a star and crescent moon, laying foundations closely linked to maritime and military life.
Year - 1899: The opening of the iconic and unmistakable Fratton Park
In 1899, the club’s board commissioned the construction of its permanent stadium, opening the historic Fratton Park, designed by the renowned architect Archibald Leitch. Fratton Park quickly became a unique venue in the south of England, renowned for its noisy and passionate supporters and its Victorian main stand. The stadium served as the setting for the club’s most memorable campaigns in the Football League and remains the spiritual home that defines the club’s identity.
Year - 1939–1945: Winning the FA Cup and keeping it safe during the Second World War
Under the tactical guidance of Jack Tinn, Portsmouth achieved their first major national success. On 29 April 1939, ‘Pompey’ won the FA Cup for the first time by defeating the favourites, Wolverhampton Wanderers, 4–1 in a decisive victory at Wembley. Due to the immediate outbreak of the Second World War and the suspension of the league, Portsmouth proudly retained and safeguarded the cup trophy for seven consecutive years during difficult times for the club.
Year - 1949–1950: The successful back-to-back First Division title-winning seasons
The post-war period marked the most successful era in the club’s history. Under manager Bob Jackson and led on the pitch by the iconic midfielder and club legend Jimmy Dickinson, Portsmouth achieved a remarkable feat by winning the English First Division title in consecutive seasons, 1948–49 and 1949–50, overcoming all the giants of the era with dynamic, fast-paced football and a rock-solid defence.
Year - 2008: A return to cup glory under Harry Redknapp
On 17 May 2008, Portsmouth made a brilliant return to domestic cup glory at the new Wembley. Led by the experienced manager Harry Redknapp, ‘Pompey’ won the FA Cup for the second time in their history by beating Cardiff City 1–0 thanks to a last-gasp, crucial goal from Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu in the first half, sparking massive celebrations across Hampshire and securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
