Historical Timeline
Year - 1885: Founded as Millwall Rovers and its industrial heritage
The club was officially founded in 1885 under the name Millwall Rovers by industrial workers at the JT Morton tinned food factory, located on Millwall Quay on the Isle of Dogs, in east London (England, on a sharp bend in the River Thames). It was founded with the firm intention of channelling sporting associationism and forging a football team that would represent the working-class and dockers’ pride of London’s East End. Led by Scottish factory workers and local industrialists such as James Morton, the team began playing their matches on a muddy pitch near the Thames docks, adopting the colour dark blue in honour of the Scottish national team.
Year - 1910: Crossing the River Thames and the opening of The Den
In 1910, faced with a shortage of space and the expiry of leases on the East End docks, the club took the momentous decision to move south of the River Thames, to the working-class neighbourhood of Bermondsey. The historic stadium, The Den, was designed by the renowned architect Archibald Leitch and opened in October 1910. The Den quickly became one of the most hostile, feared and distinctive grounds in England, serving as the undisputed home of the club’s official nickname, ‘The Lions’, earned for their fighting spirit on the pitch and the extreme loyalty of their passionate supporters.
Year - 1988: The first and historic promotion to the English First Division
The 1987–88 season stands out as one of the most memorable chapters in the club’s history. Under the firm managerial leadership of John Docherty, Millwall won the Second Division title and secured promotion to the English First Division for the first time in their history. Led up front by the unforgettable and iconic strike partnership of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino, the ‘Lions’ surprised the whole country by topping the top flight at the start of the following season, going head-to-head with the top sides.
Year - 2004: FA Cup finalists and historic qualification for European competition
On 22 May 2004, at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Millwall reached the FA Cup final for the first time in their history whilst playing in the English second division. Managed by former player Dennis Wise (who was acting as player-manager) and led on the pitch by a very young Tim Cahill, the team fought bravely and went down with absolute dignity against Sir Alex Ferguson’s formidable Manchester United side. This remarkable cup run enabled them to qualify for the UEFA Cup – their first appearance in an official European competition – the following season.
