Historical Timeline
Year - 1884 (26 June): Founded at the Monson Arms
The club was officially founded on Wednesday 26 June 1884 at the Monson Arms Hotel in Lincoln. Following the dissolution of the local clubs Lincoln Rovers and Lincoln Recreation, Mr Sharpley Bainbridge (the club’s first chairman), Mr W. Mortimer and Mr Strawson called a meeting to unite the town’s efforts and create a representative team. The name Lincoln City FC was adopted and Bainbridge was appointed chairman, with Sincil Bank established as the club’s ground in 1895.
Year - 1895: Sincil Bank Stadium was adopted
After playing their opening matches at John O’Gaunts’ ground, the board purchased a plot of land in the southern part of the city, officially opening Sincil Bank Stadium on 15 March 1895. Since then, this ground has remained the club’s uninterrupted home for all its local and league fixtures.
Year - 1902: The club’s best-ever finish in the Second Division
In the 1901–02 season, the team enjoyed its most successful league campaign in the Football League, finishing fifth in the Second Division (the second tier of English football), recording victories over direct rivals in the competition and consolidating its place in English professional football.
Year - 1976: The Fourth Division title under Graham Taylor’s management
Under the management of Graham Taylor, the club won the Fourth Division championship in the 1975–76 season. Lincoln City set a historic record by amassing 74 points in the competition (under the two-points-for-a-win system) and suffering just four defeats throughout the season.
Year - 2017: Historic run to the FA Cup quarter-finals
During the 2016–17 season, whilst playing in the National League (fifth tier), the team managed by Danny Cowley defeated clubs from higher divisions such as Ipswich Town and Brighton, beating Premier League side Burnley FC 1–0 in the round of 16. They became the first club outside the Football League to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in 103 years.
