Wilson, a lithographer and member of the local cricket club, spearheaded the creation of the football team with the aim of keeping the cricketers fit during the winter months. The team began by playing friendly matches against local clubs, wearing red and white striped kits.

In 1908, following approval from the relevant association, the club changed its name to Cardiff City Football Club to reflect the fact that it represented the capital city. In 1910, the board of directors opened Ninian Park on Sloper Road, a ground which served as the club’s official stadium and venue for all its matches for 99 years.
Year - 1927: FA Cup victory over Arsenal FC
On 23 April 1927, Cardiff City beat Arsenal FC 1–0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, with a goal scored by striker Hughie Ferguson. As a result, the team managed by Fred Stewart became the first and only club outside the geographical boundaries of England to win this traditional English cup competition.
Year - 1968: European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign and continental semi-final
After winning the Welsh Cup, the club qualified for the 1967–68 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. The team, managed by Jimmy Scoular, beat Shamrock Rovers, NAC Breda and Torpedo Moscow in the qualifying rounds, reaching the semi-finals of the continental competition against German side Hamburg SV (where they were knocked out with an aggregate score of 3–4).
Year - 2013: Direct promotion to the Premier League
In the 2012–13 season, under the management of Malky Mackay, the team were crowned EFL Championship champions after finishing top of the second-tier league, securing automatic promotion to the Premier League and ensuring the club’s return to the top flight of English professional football.
