Historical Timeline
Year - 1894: Founded as Bristol South End and the alternative football club
The club was officially founded in 1894 under the name Bristol South End by a group of local traders and sports enthusiasts in the city of Bristol, situated in the South West region of England (on the banks of the River Avon and surrounded by the picturesque scenery of the Avon Gorge). It was founded with the firm intention of establishing a professional football club that could compete on sporting terms with the long-established dominance of rugby in the area. Led by Sam Dobbs, the founders built the club on solid commercial foundations, playing their first home matches at St John’s Lane and quickly gaining acceptance within the local community.
Year - 1897–1904: Full professionalisation and the move to Ashton Gate
In 1897, the club was formally reorganised under the name Bristol City Football Club when it turned professional and joined the Southern League. Following a merger in 1900 with its neighbours and long-standing rivals, Bedminster Football Club, the board of directors took the momentous decision in 1904 to move to Ashton Gate, Bedminster’s former home ground. This historic move provided the club with first-class facilities, enabling it to join the Football League and establish deep-rooted social and institutional ties throughout the south-west region.
Year - 1906–1907: First Division runners-up in their debut season
The 1906–07 season stands out as one of the most glorious chapters in the club’s history. Having secured promotion under the tactical guidance of Harry Thickitt, Bristol City made a powerful impact in the Football League First Division, completing a formidable campaign that saw them finish as league runners-up behind champions Newcastle United. This achievement remains to this day the club’s best-ever league performance, earning them a formidable reputation throughout the United Kingdom for their dynamic and well-organised style of play.
Year - 1909: The historic run to the FA Cup final
On 24 April 1909, Bristol City reached the FA Cup final for the first and only time in their history. After a brilliant cup run in which they knocked out the strongest clubs of the era, Thickitt’s side faced Manchester United in the final, held at Crystal Palace in front of more than 71,000 spectators. Although they lost 1–0 in a creditable performance, thanks to a goal from Sandy Turnbull, this feat definitively established the club amongst the elite of English football and cemented the reputation of that generation of pioneering players.
Year - 2015: The historic league and cup double in the lower leagues
Under the dynamic management of Steve Cotterill, Bristol City enjoyed one of the most successful seasons of its modern era during the 2014–15 campaign. The team achieved a historic double by being crowned undisputed champions of EFL League One with an impressive tally of 99 points, and by lifting the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley after beating Walsall 2–0. This milestone capped a period of excellent attacking football and laid the foundations for the club’s revival in the Football League at its modernised Ashton Gate stadium.
