Historical Timeline
Year - 1874: Founded as Christ Church FC
The club was founded in 1874 as Christ Church Football Club at the Sunday school of Christ Church in Bolton, Lancashire. The initiative was spearheaded by schoolteacher Thomas Ogden and supported by the Reverend Joseph Farrall Wright (perpetual warden of the church) to provide the school’s pupils with organised physical and sporting activities. In 1877, after becoming independent of the church, it adopted the name Bolton Wanderers due to initial difficulties in securing a permanent playing ground and its consequent nomadic nature.
Year - 1888: Founding member of the Football League
In 1888, the club was one of the twelve founding members of the Football League, the world’s first structured league competition. The club played the league’s opening match against Derby County, establishing itself as one of the leading teams in the north of the country at the dawn of the professional era.
Year - 1923: FA Cup victory at the opening of Wembley
On 28 April 1923, the club won its first ever FA Cup by beating West Ham United 2–0 in the inaugural final at Wembley Stadium, known as the ‘White Horse’ final due to the police intervention to clear the pitch of spectators who had exceeded the venue’s capacity.
Year - 1958: FA Cup victory thanks to a brace from Nat Lofthouse
On 3 May 1958, captained by striker Nat Lofthouse, Bolton Wanderers beat Manchester United 2–0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Lofthouse scored both goals in the match, securing the club’s fourth title in this English cup competition.
Year - 2005: Historic qualification for the UEFA Cup
Under the technical leadership of manager Sam Allardyce, the club finished sixth in the Premier League in the 2004–05 season. This enabled the club to qualify for a European competition for the first time in its history (the 2005–06 UEFA Cup), where it reached the knockout stages after facing clubs from various European countries.
