Historical Timeline
Year - 1875: The foundation at the St Leger Hotel and the student initiative
The club was officially founded on 5 November 1875 during a meeting at the St Leger Hotel in the town of Blackburn, situated in the county of Lancashire (North-West England, at the foot of the West Pennine Hills and in the Blakewater Valley). The initiative was spearheaded by Arthur Constantine and John Lewis, two former grammar school pupils who sought to establish a formal and highly organised association football club for the district’s young people. At that founding meeting, under Lewis’s leadership, the articles of association for Blackburn Rovers were drawn up; the club was founded with the firm intention of representing Lancashire’s industrial and sporting pride through civic endeavour.
Year - 1884–1886: The historic and unrivalled hat-trick of FA Cup titles
Towards the end of the 19th century, Blackburn Rovers established themselves as the undisputed powerhouse of English football. Under the leadership of captain James Brown, the team achieved a remarkable feat by winning three consecutive FA Cup titles in 1884, 1885 and 1886, defeating Queen’s Park of Scotland in the first two and West Bromwich Albion in the third. This unparalleled dominance compelled the Football Association to award the club a special commemorative crest and cemented the technical reputation of its players at the dawn of the professional era.
Year - 1888: Pioneering pride as a founding club and the move to Ewood Park
In 1888, Blackburn Rovers were one of the twelve proud founding members of the Football League in its inaugural season. Just two years later, in 1890, the club took the momentous decision to move to its current and historic home: Ewood Park, situated on the banks of the River Darwen. Ewood Park quickly became an impregnable stronghold, hosting the campaigns that would see the club crowned with its first two First Division titles in the 1911–12 and 1913–14 seasons, ushering in an era of deep-rooted community support.
Year - 1991–1995: Jack Walker’s revolution and the conquest of the Premier League
After decades of obscurity in the lower leagues, the takeover of the club by the billionaire industrialist and fervent supporter Jack Walker in 1991 sparked an unprecedented revival. Walker invested heavily in the modernisation of Ewood Park and appointed the iconic Scottish manager Kenny Dalglish. Buoyed by the goals of the ruthless striker Alan Shearer, the club achieved its finest hour in the 1994–95 season by being crowned Premier League champions in a dramatic finale at Anfield, ending Manchester United’s dominance and restoring league glory to Blackburn after 81 years.
